Dr. David Larsen has spent most of his medical career researching and treating difficult headaches. Early on he became interested in severe and intractable headaches as he had a hard time finding help for his spouse when she began suffering from debilitating migraines in her mid 30’s. Several generations of family members also have severe headaches as well so he is very invested personally in developing new treatments and in staying current with the latest advancements in the field of headaches and facial pain. He has even developed a patent-pending drug to treat medication overuse headaches (rebound headaches).
Dr. Larsen was among the first doctors in the world to use Botox for headaches in 1998. Having trained under Dr. Cynthia Comella, a world renowned expert in dystonia and the use of Botox injections for movement disorders, he was interested in the role of neck pain in headaches and migraine and if Botox could be effective in treating neck induced headaches. This was expanded in 1998-2000 to treating migraines and headaches directly. Today, Dr. Larsen is the largest user of Botox in suburban Chicago (per Allergan, Inc.). Dr. Larsen also received training in diagnosis and treatment of headaches while at Rush University Medical Center from Dr.'s Lawrence Robbins and Robert Wright, experts in headache and migraine medicine.
